This picture is a miracle.
Vincristine is one of the 12 chemotherapy drugs VB was on while in treatment. One of the side effects of the drug is that it makes walking difficult — for some of the youngest cancer patients, it can make walking impossible. VB spent the better part of a year struggling to get about on his own two feet. He had only just begun to walk when cancer came in and took so much away.
When treatment ended in October of 2007, it took awhile before VB could walk without tripping. After that, the goal was running - which VB does now with wild abandon, swinging his body from side-to-side as his arms swing and joyous laughter erupts. Recently, shortly before his 4th birthday, VB did something we’d never seen him do — he jumped.
“Baby steps.”
“One foot in front of the other.”
These are the things we say to ourselves as we work through life’s challenges. We keep moving forward, in the face of the unimaginable, by keeping our eyes focused and our feet secured below.
On September 13, 2009, The Rourke Family, along with a family and friends) will once again put our best feet forward and participate in the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk. Our goal is ambitious — to raise $10,000 for the “Cure AT/RT Now” fund at Dana Farber. Although it’s a tall order, it is nothing compared to the endurance VB showed while undergoing treatment, and still shows today.
As he has inspired us, I hope he inspires you. Anything you can give — even a few dollars — brings us closer to our goal. $10,000 is the minimum amount that teams need to raise in order to designate the donations to a particular fund, and we are determined to ensure that our friends at Dana Farber have the resources they need to continue making advancements in the treatment of AT/RT.

Father and son. November, 2008
One in three people will face cancer in his or her lifetime, but no one has to face it alone. On Sept. 13, 2009, the participants of the Boston Marathon® Jimmy Fund Walk to benefit Dana-Farber Cancer Institute will change the odds for patients facing all forms of cancer. Please support our efforts by giving generously.
The Walk supports the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. In 2008, Dana-Farber conducted 264,577 pediatric and adult patient visits and infusions and offered more than 735 therapeutic clinical trials. Every day our scientists are pushing towards groundbreaking new discoveries as our compassionate caregivers treat our hopeful patients. Live a little of the miracle that is Dana-Farber. Please turn up your volume and visit jimmyfundwalk.org/presentation to begin.
I am walking for my son, who remains a survivor of AT/RT thanks to the research and clinical work at Dana Farber's Jimmy Fund Clinic. I walk to ensure that he continues to have a chance at a normal and healthy life. I walk for our friends Charlotte and Avalanna, who we celebrate as they move into survivorship. I walk for Bram, who is still in treatment. And I walk for Mia and Emily, and all of those who have lost their battle but live on in our hearts and memories.
Your gift ensures that one day, kids and families will not have to go through what we've experienced. Every dollar counts. Thank you for joining me on this journey through your donation.
